El diamante: el mineral más duro del planeta

Son muchas las características que hacen del diamante el más espectacular de los minerales. No hay ninguna otra gema que sea tan dura como el diamante, que posee una dureza de 10 sobre la escala de Mohs.

La clasificación de los diamantes se determina a partir de las llamadas 4 C: Carat (peso), Clarity (pureza), Color y Cut (talla). El peso de los diamantes, y de los minerales en general, se mide en quilates. Si por ejemplo vas a adquirir un anillo de compromiso para tu pareja y has pensado en hacerlo con un anillo solitario de diamantes verás que su tamaño es mayor o menor según los quilates que posea la piedra.

Los diamantes más sorprendentes son los llamados ‘Fancy’, y son aquellos que poseen un color tan intenso que supera la escala de color. ¿Y por qué esto es tan especial? El diamante es un mineral que sólo está formado por carbono, así que encontrar uno que posea color es algo muy raro y ,por tanto, muy valioso.

En este caso hay que diferenciar muy bien si se trata de un diamante Fancy o si más bien se ha añadido color al diamante de forma artificial. Estos últimos pueden conseguirse al aplicar irradiación sobre ellos o con otros tratamientos con calor.

¿Dónde se encuentran los diamantes?

La palabra diamante proviene del término griego ‘adamas’ que significa invencible. Aunque no fue hasta el siglo XVIII cuando se empezó a comercializar con estas piedras preciosas, sus orígenes se remontan al siglo I d.C, donde encontramos las primeras referencias literarias.

El lugar donde más diamantes se encuentran es en Sudáfrica, donde están los principales yacimientos de estas piedras preciosas del mundo. ¿Cuáles son los diamantes más famosos del mundo?

El color, la pureza o el tamaño de algunos diamantes es tan impresionante que acaban siendo piezas únicas de un valor incalculable. Este es el caso de algunas de las joyas más caras del mundo, como el diamante Cullinan, conocido por ser el diamantes más grande descubierto jamás. Fue hallado en Sudáfrica en 1905 y cuando se talló se obtuvieron 105 gemas con un peso total de 1.063 quilates.
